Appleton and Oshkosh Branches to Host 8th Annual STEM Program for Girls
on Saturday, March 9, 2024, at UW OSHKOSH FOX CITIES

UWO Fox Cities, Menasha – The Appleton and Oshkosh Branches will again host AAUW Tech Savvy, a daylong conference with all women mentors, designed to show girls firsthand how STEM fields can lead to exciting careers.  The conference will welcome girls (all are welcome) in grades six through nine and their parents/guardians to UW Oshkosh Fox Cities.

More information about Tech Savvy and the programming being offered this year can be found on either of the following websites. Registration opens January 12, 2024.  There is limited space in the workshops so early registration is encouraged to get the sessions you want. Link:

Girls from last year found the Tech Savvy conference interactive and FUN! This year’s experiences deal with Robotics, Chemistry, Computer Coding, Circuitry, Hematology, the Making of Medicines, and Crime Scene Investigation.

Parents also attend workshops to learn how to encourage their daughters.  One parent commented,” I found the overall experience beneficial, and I feel empowered to help my child.” Another parent said they were inspired to help their daughter to shoot higher, learn what “Engineering” can mean, and the financial cost of college.

Included in the conference are college recruiters and girl-empowering workshops.  One girl’s reflection on the College Savvy workshop, “I really enjoyed meeting college recruiters and getting the information I needed to know to apply for college and about what careers are good for me”.

Although women hold close to half of all jobs in the U.S. economy, they hold less than 25 percent of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) jobs.  AAUW’s research was compiled in the following documents: Solving the Equation and Why So Few Report that targets The STEM GAP: Women and Girls in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.  AAUW’s Tech Savvy and similar programs offer one way to increase the number of women in the STEM pipeline.  Created in 2006 by Tamara Brown, former president of the AAUW Buffalo (NY) Branch. As a result of her work, Brown was honored as a White House Champion of Change.
